The "Styromag"

Metal shavings, from tool joints, stabilizers, casing, bit bearings and the like, can cause a hair-pulling during sample examination. OK, so it's a bit corny, but it works as a simple way to help prevent the unwanted growth of a clump of metal shavings on your tweezers. Two styrofoam cups and a fridge magnet solve it, removing almost all shavings:

Start with two styrofoam cups and a fridge magnet........

Place the magnet inside one cup like this....

....so it sits inside the lip. Pour sample into the inner cup so it passes over the magnet....

...leaving the metal filings up on the side of the inner cup. Dump the sample, and lift the inner cup out to dump out the shavings. Added advantage: It allows you to keep track of washouts in progress.
